Westmount Moving Ottawa Canada.

May 31, 2012   Last December we almost lost our daughter.  A vibrant 30-year old, she found herself in the Intensive Care Unit of the Ottawa Hospital, facing months of recovery and unable to work.  Of the many things that we had to deal with on her behalf, one was her apartment.  We called a number of movers and chose Westmount Moving.  We were impressed by the reassurances Westmount Moving gave us that they would properly package and store her furniture and personal belongings.  They provided a detailed breakdown of what would be done and the associated costs, and were very sympathetic to her situation.  While the costs were high, we believed that it was a worthwhile investment and one less thing for us to worry about under the circumstances.   The first clue that things were not as promised, was that the monthly storage fees were twice what had been quoted.  Fatigued, we accepted Westmount’s explanation that we had miscalculated the volume of her belongings (although their quote was based on an item by item description of what was in her apartment).   Our daughter’s recovery continued and she recently moved to another city to be near the appropriate medical care.  She found an apartment and arranged to have her things moved out of storage.  She first asked Westmount to do the move but the cost was prohibitive.  So she arranged with a third party to pick up her things from Westmount Moving in Ottawa and move them to her new apartment.  The third party had a very difficult time arranging for the move with Westmount Moving.  When he did manage to arrange to pick up her things, he was required to sign a form to have them released.   When he unloaded her belongings at the new apartment, it was evident that serious damage had been done by Westmount Moving.  The Westmount movers did not disassemble her (new) furniture, they tore it apart, shredding joints, peeling the wood veneer and breaking brackets.  Framed art was thrown into boxes of books, leaving broken glass throughout.  These are just two examples of the damage done.  Some pictures are attached.  So our daughter, who is still unable to work, has furniture that is broken and unable to be assembled, and many other damaged belongings.   We have approached Westmount Moving about the damage and have been told that they will not accept responsibility because the third party mover signed a form which apparently said that all was in order.  The third party mover did not tear our daughter’s furniture apart, Westmount Moving did.  The third party mover did not break glass and damage other belongings, Westmount Moving did.   It’s sad when a technicality trumps the importance of a company doing the right thing for its customers.

Move.

Needing a moving company I contacted several companies that advertise on TSN690.

I came up with Westmount Moving, not because of the price but because of the procedure's they gave me.

Moving advisor Kelli Bew's was very helpful and knowledgeable so the first question I asked was"BED BUGS"

How are you going to protect me from bed bugs.

Kelli went thru all the procedures and I was satisfied with her answer.

Damage was the next question..These are professional movers not agency people!

Are they perfect..nope.

They nicked one door frame and it took me 30 seconds to touch up with paint.

Didn't damage any furniture.

I estimated a 5 hr job but they were in and out in 4.

At the end of the day I highly recommend Westmount Moving.

Truly a professional company.

Funny advertising also on the radio.

Thank you Westmount Moving!!

The worst movers ever!

Movers left furniture behind. They took items not belonging to us from our old address and refused to return them back to their owners. They broke items, damaged our walls and ceramic floors, scratched our hardwood floors, took time to go for dinner while charging us. They also used foul language, caused our entire freezer of meat to be thawed and ruined, lied about everything, claimed our preacher must be responsible for damages because he was with me, demanded twice the amount after being paid, refused to allow us to make a claim for damages until we paid them twice the amount. Very unprofessional and very bad to deal with afterwards.

Horrible Experience.

I could not possibly be more unhappy with my experience with Westmount Movers. First: The packers arrived at my home and from the onset were discourteous and unprofessional. They immediately began to complain about the company, and about the amount of items they had to pack. The salesman had underestimated the weight of the move and they didn't have enough boxes. Among the first words out of the foreman's mouth were, "This is going to cost you a lot more than you were told." He was the only one of the crew, however, who seemed to know what he was doing. Items he packed did not break. I can't say the same of the rest of the crew. Fragile pieces of pottery were packed underneath heavy items. Flat pieces of ceramics were packed at an angle against other items, rather than laid flat.  Needless to say, they arrived broken. In other boxes, usually large ones, items were simply tossed in with no intentional arrangement or padding. An open bag of pet food was tossed into a box containing a duvet. (The cat food had been marked, "Do not pack. Do not move.") The foreman asked me at one point, "Why do you need so many dishes?"  I had a studio space in a separate building, and when the packers were finished there, they returned to the main house and left both doors standing open in winter.  When I discovered it, the temperature in the building was down to 5 degrees. After they left, I found a family scrapbook tossed in a pile of trash. They packed piles of items clearly marked "Do not pack. No not move." They even packed one of the signs. I cannot find words to express how insulted I felt by their disregard for me, my home, and my belongings.  And..  Westmount had made it clear that they would only insure items THEY packed. So I felt I had no choice but to use their people. On move-out day, the movers put no pads on the floor to protect my home from mud. I lived in the country, and it was early March.  I ended up with a $300 cleaning bill to get the floors cleaned. When they arrived at my new home in Alberta, the crew was equally disappointing.  One of the movers, whom they contracted locally, yelled at me for telling him what rooms (and what floor of the house) items should go in. I have never been spoken to that rudely by someone whose salary I was, in fact, paying.  Another of the crew unloaded the truck with earbuds on, so that he didn't have to hear me tell him where things should go. Furniture ended up in the wrong rooms, and, even though I was recovering from an injury (I'd just stopped using a cane) I had to haul stuff up and down steps and move boxes around in the garage to find items that were clearly labeled as to what room they went in. On the moving out day, the foreman asked me to disassemble my bookshelves and desk. Then, when they arrived in my new home, he refused to reassemble them because his people hadn't taken them apart.  My beds were both assembled with supportive parts unattached to the platforms. The entire experience was disrespectful.  This was a $13,000 move, and this was the treatment I got? I hope that anyone reading this review is saved from the experience that I had.  It was beyond awful.

Horrible.

The initial response was nice. The rep came home to give estimate and followed up emails back and forth with me for about four month before we finally fixed a loading day. I thought I found a good company, BUT read on.

On loading day (Saturday), driver told us the stuff will be unloaded on Monday and we have to pay the full estimate amount (instead of actual amount which obviously is less) before unload. The reason was that the back office is not open on weekends so he won't be able to process paperwork for actual amount. We got upset and the sale rep was unreachable. Finally we found out the V.P.'s phone number from the initial sales package and got this sorted out, but there was hours' long discussion.

The moving team seemed to be nice until we found out the followings after we signed off the unloading sheet:1) Cash of USD1700 was STOLEN from a handbag we placed in a close closet. 2) Screws were missing for the baby crib they uninstalled (they did not reassemble the crib before leaving stating that it is not their responsibility).3) Screws were missing in a queen bed they disassembled and reassembled. We did not know the situation until the bed collapsed next night. My elderly mom almost got hurt.4) A huge multi-functional ladder is loss. Until now I cannot imagine how such a big ladder could disappear from the so-call "locked" moving truck.

This was what happened to me. They appeared reliable until we signed off and started to sort out the mass. It was an international move, so now we are in a different country and hard to recourse anything.

BTW, the insurance we purchased upfront covered the last three items above, but declined the cash theft claim despite police report. Make sure you buy sufficient insurance if you still decide to hire Westmount Moving after reading this.

Do Not Use This Company.

DO NOT use Westmount Moving to move your possessions.  I am still in the middle of this nightmare and not sure when it is going to end.  My first call to the company to inquire about moving, they were very responsive and got back to me immediately with any questions.  Great I thought, this is going well.  Then moving day came.  The move was set up for 7-9am which by the way I confirmed the Friday prior.  9am came and went with no truck in sight.  I called the company and was told they would be there around 2pm.  I told them that this is not what was agreed upon, as well the elevator had been booked and I had to be out by noon.  They told me truck would be there shortly.  Three more times I called and each time was told it is on its way, it is on its way, it is on its way.  Finally just before noon the truck (rental Penske truck) showed up.  The three younger guys did the job in about 3hours which for a one bedroom apartment was longer than it should have taken.  Finally the apartment was empty and we jumped in our car and headed to Calgary from Ottawa.

The date on the contract stated it would be delivered between July 10 and 23rd.  When I asked Bill Goyette, the salesman I set the move up with how often it takes the full term to arrive he said he could not guarantee anything but most times it does not take the whole time allotted.  With no word from the company, I first contacted them by email on July 10th asking if they had any idea on a date for my furniture to arrive so that we could book the elevator at our new address in Calgary.  I received no response!  I re sent the same email on July 16th with ?? in the message.  The next day I received an email from Eugenie Desnoyers who I assume is a customer service rep with this quote. “I just wanted to advise you that your furniture is on route.  I will be in contact with the driver this morning to know if he has an ETA in regards of the delivery of your furniture.”
I responded back the same day asking if possible to make the delivery on Saturday as my wife and I would be off work for the move.  This again is the quote from the email I received from the same person.  “I just talked to Driver and mentioned to him that you needed to know when it will be delivered because you need to book the elevator.  He told me to have the elevator booked for July 23-2012, that’s when he will deliver.”

Even though this was not Saturday, I was just glad to know I would have my furniture soon.  Oh but wait I received another email on July 19th.  “I just found out that your furniture will not be arriving on July 23-2012, the Van Lines have advised me that it will be delivered later on next week.”  I sent a response the next day demanding a call and explanation of what is going on and that I wanted a call by the end of business that day.  Big surprise no call!!  On July 22 I received another email saying they were sorry no one called and that I would receive a phone call that day.  They also thanked me for my cooperation in the matter, as if I had a choice.  Well you guessed it, no phone call as promised yet again.  I did receive yet another email, this time from the customer service department from North American Van Lines telling me my furniture will not be delivered til after Aug 2 2012.  I called this agent back to find out where exactly my furniture was and they told me still sitting in warehouse in Ottawa.  I called Eugenie Desnoyers and asked flat out why I was lied to, saying my furniture was on route, not once but twice.  She basically denied saying that but I have the emails to prove it.

I could go on and on about promises of people telling me they would call me back and look into the matter but this is getting too long.  I will however update the comment if and when I ever receive my furniture.

For your own sanity DO NOT under any circumstances use this company unless you want a whole world of stress and aggravation.
As a update as of July 27th I received a call from the company advising me they would discount my move by about 1400.00 dollars.  Funny thing is that my original estimate was 2500.00 so my bill now is only 2700.00 after the discount.  So they are telling me my furniture weight was almost double the estimate.  Dont think I will ever see my furniture again.

As close to unacceptable as they could manage.

So the first half went well enough. Sales process seemed nice and professional, packers were friendly and professional, and pick up went alright.
My first hint that I was going to hit problems was probably when I could't get my sales rep to be responsive when I was trying to sign the contract. If that's THE MOST important thing any sales rep cares about and can't manage to get back to you, you know it's going to be an uphill battle from there, right.
Anyway, the troubles begin a few days later. The rep promised a range of delivery of 5 to 15 days, but of course assured me he was sure it'd be more on the 5 days side. So I planned my entire move based on this.
As the days went on, I had to harass the rep multiple times to get any sort of update. Where is my stuff? When will I gte it? I'd get dripped fed new dates. "Just a few days". "oop, no, few more days".
Long story short, after 15 days of complete uncertainty, on the 15th day, the very last day of the contractual range, we get a call from dispatch (NOT our sales rep) telling us the truck will be here between 1 and 4 pm.
At 4:30pm I get a call from Westmount saying they need to charge my card for the 6500$ needed. I say "you're not charging my card till I know where this truck here", to which I'm told, slightly paraphrasing, "if you don't pay, you'll never see your stuff again".
So they are quite clearly holding my stuff hostage. With 0 faith left in them, I now need to trust them with that money and trust a truck will appear, based on nothing but their word, which is obviously meaningless to me at this point. But, no choice, so I pay.
At 9:30pm (remember, truck was supposed to be here between 1 and 4, so you plan your day based on that) the truck arrives.
It's 2 guys and a ball pen. NO moving gear of any sort. Not even a box cutter. My wife and I are forced to serve as supplementaty moving crew, because we need this done before next century.
By 2am we're done. The two guys with a ballpen head off to another move 3 states over (they don't get to sleep).
That's the story. Maybe you find this acceptable, maybe you don't, but that's what happened. From my research, this would be considered a "good result".

Westmount moving Waterloo to Ottawa.

The Sales Rep in Waterloo was very informed about moves. I was worried particularly about my Jukebox, and he assured us that Westmount had moved them safely in the past. He promised us that fragile items such as dried twig lamps, heavy clay jugs, and decorations would be boxed properly.
When the shipment was received in Ottawa, the movers were very friendly and hard-working, even though they drove all day from Waterloo amid traffic issues. They decided to move our belongings in that evening, and cope with 2 sets of stairs in our townhouse.
When they unwrapped the jukebox from blankets, a piece of plastic from the right front side had broken off. An unsuccessful search of the truck didn't turn up the piece, so we assume it was broken sometime after leaving our condo and being transferred into the bigger long haul truck. We wonder why such a heavy, valuable, and rare item wasn't properly crated for transport, as Wurlitzer jukebox replacement parts are difficult to source.
There were other minor damages (from we consider to be inadequate wrapping), such as a chip from a heavy (uncreated, unwrapped) slate coffee table; a few twigs broken from the items mentioned earlier; and a scratch on a custom-made, imported, red leather love seat. We were surprised, since there was virtually no damage to our goods during an earlier move all the way to and from Switzerland!

I feel that the movers in Waterloo did not properly wrap our pricey belongings for a long distance move. The move time out of the Waterloo condo was erroneously estimated at a half day, and took until 1:45pm, causing us an awkward and stressful situation with others who had reserved the elevator at noon as they had a reserved move-in time in Toronto that afternoon.

For these reasons, I would rate the Waterloo portion of our move 2/10 and the Ottawa portion 9/10.

Terrible move.

Will never use this company again. The guys were hard working. Company underestimated size of truck had to move in two truck loads. Insurance was not well explained to me. All items scratched and dented were not insured. Some money was stolen from my purse left on counter. I still as of today find items that they damaged. One of my worst moves ever.
